How the Curriculum in PE has been adapted following the Covid-19 Pandemic
During both lockdowns the PE department played a vital role in ensuring the physical, mental and social health of our students was considered by setting many ‘lockdown challenges’.
Since returning to school we have ensured our curriculum is tailored towards two main strands post covid19:
- A greater emphasis on fitness and wellbeing
- Re-introduction of sports we have been unable to teach during the pandemic
We have also re-established routines such as changing for PE that also contributes to a wider curriculum for our students.
PE at The Bay
As a Physical Education Department, our role is to contribute to the overall education of young people by helping them lead full, valuable, safe and healthy lives. Our aim is to develop all students physically, morally and socially through physical activity and sport and provide future pathways for participation and pursuit of sporting excellence.
Physical Education develops students’ confidence and competence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.
All students will achieve and make progress by developing their skills and techniques, their decision-making abilities, their physical and mental capacity, their evaluating and improving skills and their ability to make informed choices about active, healthy lifestyles.
The Bay CE School PE department has superb facilities: a sports hall, a climbing wall/rock, high quality games pitches, an athletics track, an all weather cricket pitch, an 4g astroturf, tennis courts, netball courts, a multi gym and a fitness suite.
There is an extensive range of clubs and plenty of opportunities for competitions and matches against other schools. The PE Curriculum is very diverse and we offer an extensive range of sports and activities.
Participation
It is expected that your child brings their PE kit even if excused from the lesson. Students are expected to play an active learning role (official, coach, teaching assistant) and should continue to look like a part of the lesson, albeit in a more limited capacity. We also ask students to change when not participating to ensure they have a dry uniform to change back into if their group has an outdoor lesson.
If a student needs to be excused for an entire block of activity we will require a medical note and we will design a bespoke plan of action dependent upon the medical condition. Please speak to your child’s PE teacher if you have any concerns.

Core PE at Phase 3 (Years 10 – 11)
Students have an opportunity to specialise in certain areas and can either continue a similar curriculum to that in Phase 2 or choose a specialist option such as OAA and team building/problem solving challenges. Pupils should tackle complex and demanding physical activities and get involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle. Where specialisation takes place, blocks may increase from 6 weeks in length to approximately 9 weeks in length to allow for a greater depth of study.
Students also have the option during Phase 3 of their career at The Bay CE School to follow courses in BTEC Sport.
The PE Curriculum in phase 3 is much more specialised rather than the diverse approach in phase 2. Students will cover one activity per half term (6 per year) from the following activities.
Autumn term |
Spring Term |
Summer Term |
Football, netball, rugby, hockey, table tennis, badminton. |
Basketball, fitness, gymnastics, trampolining, tchoukball, indoor rowing. |
Athletics, cricket, tennis, rounders, softball, climbing. |
During phase 3 students have also the opportunity to develop their leadership skills within lessons as well as by supporting local primary school sporting events, the PE Department and House Leaders.
BTEC Tech Award in Sport at Phase 3
In Year 10 and 11 students are able to study the BTEC Tech Award in Sport qualification.
The Tech Award gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific applied knowledge and skills through realistic vocational contexts. Learners will have the opportunity to develop applied knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- investigating provisions for sport including equipment and facilities to enhance sport
- planning and delivery of sport drills and sessions
- fitness for sport including fitness testing and methodology.
Students will study three mandatory components:
- Component 1 - Preparing Participants to Take Part in Sport and Physical Activity
- Component 2 - Taking Part and Improving Other Participants Sporting Performance
- Component 3 - Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants Performance in Sport and Physical Activity
Assessment
Components 1 and 2 are assessed through non-exam internal assessment. The non-exam internal assessment for these components has been designed to demonstrate application of the conceptual knowledge underpinning the sector through realistic tasks and activities. This style of assessment promotes deep learning through ensuring the connection between knowledge and practice. Non-exam internal assessment is delivered through Pearson-set Assignments. These assignments are set by Pearson, marked by the centre and moderated by Pearson.
There is one external assessment, Component 3, which provides the main synoptic assessment for the qualification. Component 3 builds directly on Components 1 and 2 and enables learning to be brought together and related to a real-life situation. The design of this external assessment ensures that there is sufficient stretch and challenge, enabling the assessment of knowledge and understanding at the end of the learning period.
