Year 6 Rugby
On Wednesday afternoon, 8 of our Year 6 boys travelled to Wootton Recreation Ground, home to the Isle of Wight Rugby Club, to compete in the tag rugby island finals.
The team was drawn in a tough group with Greenmount, Shalfleet and Queensgate. First up was Shalfleet. The boys started strongly with some superb defending as well as faultless attacks securing a victory in their first game. Next up was Greenmount. This game was fast paced and end to end with brilliant rugby on display from both teams. Unfortunately, Greenmount struck late to take the win by one try! In our final group game, we faced Queensgate knowing that the winner would qualify for the semi finals. Our team started with real intent and continued this over the 7 minutes to comfortably take victory and qualify for the island semi finals!
After finishing our group in 2nd place, our semi final opponents were Group A winners Wootton. This game swayed both ways, as we took an early lead before Wootton struck back, we then equalised before Wootton scored the decisive, and winning, try.
Despite losing the semi final, we still had the task of securing 3rd place in the play off against a very strong Northwood side. Our boys were starting to tire and found it hard to cope with the rapid attacks of the Northwood players. However, they dug deep and found a way to continue their effective attacks to draw the game and secure joint 3rd place on the island. A superb achievement with no regular rugby players in the side.
