Spanish Day
The primary site held a whole school Spanish Day on Wednesday 3rd July.
Pupils learnt Spanish but also learnt about Spanish speaking countries from around the world such as Costa Rica, Mexico and Argentina. They were invited to wear clothes that represented the country their class was learning about.
At lunch time the special Spanish Day menu was Paella with patatas bravas and roasted mediterranean vegetables.
Reception pupils came into school dressed either in Spanish dress or wearing red or yellow. They looked at where Spain is on the world map and then made Spanish flags and learnt some words in Spanish throughout the day. They learnt to say Hello and Goodbye and also counted 1-10 in English and then Spanish.
Year 2 pupils learnt about Cuba, they came to school wearing the colours of the Cuban flag, red, white and blue. They made flags and fans that they used during Spanish dancing. The pupils pretended they were in Cuba and wrote postcards back home. They also enjoyed making flamingos as Cuba is home to a large colony of the colourful birds.
Year 3 pupils started the day by practising some Spanish greetings. Using the greetings, they had the opportunity to create their own superhero conversation which they loved doing. In the afternoon, they created some bunting and completed a fact file linked to Costa Rica.
In Year 4 pupils learnt about Venezuela. They made colourful Toucans from paper plates.
Year 5 looked at the history of Argentina and its geography. They finished the morning with a Spanish lesson and learned how to speak some simple phrases.
All pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 had a Spanish Language workshop delivered by Mrs Peace where they learnt various ways to greet each other as well as being able to ask each other their name in Spanish and be able to reply.
“It was a wonderful day teaching Spanish to Key Stage 2. Through the fun activities and dressing in the colours of their class country the children had a really positive experience of learning language and culture. I was very impressed with how enthusiastic everyone was to learn some Spanish and I’m really looking forward to teaching all of you in the next academic year. A big thank you must go out to my fantastic Year 6 helpers, who did a brilliant job supporting the younger children with their learning.”
