MFL at The Bay

At The Bay, we believe that inspiring children to be curious and creative by exploring a modern foreign language, enhances all areas of the curriculum. Our chosen language is Spanish and we strive to achieve the following vision set out in the National Curriculum:

Intent

Through our MFL curriculum, we aim to develop the foundations that will enable pupils' to acquire the knowledge to communicate effectively in a language that is not their native tongue. Aligned with the learning of a language, will be a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures. It is also important that we enable pupils to have a secure basic knowledge of a foreign language to give them the confidence and ability to continue their MFL journey at secondary school.

We offer an all-through Spanish curriculum. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 will receive specialist Spanish teaching for a half term and Years 5 and 6 will receive specialist Spanish teaching a term per year.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to offer variety, enjoyment and challenge for all children. The curriculum aims to give our pupils exposure to a foreign language through practical activities linked to everyday experience. We use the KAPOW scheme of work to ensure high quality lessons are taught across KS2 and to enable children to build on their existing language knowledge and acquisition as they progress through the school.

Impact

Pupils’ understanding of concepts taught is assessed using the KAPOW assessments at the end of each unit of teaching. The MFL curriculum will also be shown through individual folders of work, classroom displays and pupil confidence in using and interpreting the target language.
