DT
Design Technology at The Bay
Design and Technology is about providing opportunity for children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs. Children will also develop skills alongside the design process, related to food technology, sewing, moving mechanisms and more.
Intent
Through our DT curriculum at The Bay, we hope to inspire pupils to use their creativity and imagination by designing and making products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We hope to develop children’s skills, enabling them to become critical thinkers who challenge themselves, whilst building resilience.
Implementation
Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an interactive process of designing and making. Key skills and key knowledge for DT have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups. The context for the children’s work in Design and Technology is also well considered and children learn about real life structures and the purpose of specific examples, as well as developing their skills throughout the programme of study. Design and technology lessons are also taught as a block so that children’s learning is focused throughout each unit of work.
Impact
Having taken part in a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils should be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making so that they can apply these skills across the curriculum.
Pupils are expected to have learnt new skills and built on existing ones, understanding and applying these in a variety of contexts. This should enable them to confidently progress to the next key stage, where they can continue to build on these skills and eventually use them in later life.
