The GCSE Citizenship Studies engages students in deepening their knowledge of democracy and government, the law, rights and responsibilities and how we live together in society. It aims to give them the knowledge and skills to understand, challenge and engage with democratic society including politics, the media, civil society, the economy and the law. We want them to critically evaluate the ways actions are conducted, laws and procedures used in the UK and be able to compare them to alternatives. Through active citizenship students get the opportunity to focus on something they feel passionate about and our intention is that students will get to explore the ways they can make a difference and actively seek these out in their own lives to make themselves active members of our community.

Phase 2 and 3:

Citizenship Studies is covered on our Futures Days. All year groups will follow a bespoke curriculum day focussed on Citizenship and will meet the statutory requirements.

Citizenship Studies encourages a number of skills which are useful in many fields, developing particularly the following skills:

• clear and logical thinking
• research skills
• planning and organising
• evaluation of ideas
• an ability to empathise and understand conflict
• problem-solving skills

These skills are particularly useful for future careers in law, education, social work, politics, medicine, administration, the civil service, public services such as nursing or the police, or the media.
